The Miracle Dog
Rescue Program was founded as a nonprofit program to help rescue abandoned dogs
from Southern California
and Baja, CA. Mexico, Tijuana and surrounding areas and to adopt them out in the United
States. It is the only such program in California
and possibly in the United States. When
abandoned dogs from Mexican border areas are rehabilitated rather than
abandoned to the streets, they become fine, loving, grateful companions to
their U.S. adopters.
When we began our
program in 2006, we had only a few dogs. The principle then was the same as it
is now; each dog is spayed or neutered, given a complete physical by a local
volunteer veterinarian, and given the food, shelter, medicine, love and
encouragement he or she needs in rescue foster homes while suitable permanent
homes are found in the United States. The
program has grown since the early days, and now many more dogs and puppies come
to us through concerned people who seek no repayment other than for their
direct costs.
When we started, we
soon realized we had underestimated the task, and we felt overwhelmed. It
sometimes seemed as though there could be no solution to the monumental problem
of spaying or neutering every pup or dog our volunteer foster owners wanted to
rehabilitate. We wondered if we could really make a difference in what seemed
an out-of- control situation.
But it turned out that
the answer was, and remains, YES. By approaching the situation as a series of
single challenges instead of trying to "fix the whole problem," we
have now saved, treated and adopted out hundreds of dogs and puppies that would
soon have died as sick, hungry, abandoned and helpless animals in the streets
of Mexico. We hope you will help this program continue.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
Through word of
mouth, concerned people learn they can bring us abandoned dogs from Southern California, Tijuana
and surrounding areas where the “street dog problem” is substantial. Many dogs
there are abandoned, and their only choice is to turn feral and fend for
themselves. Many of these dogs are sick, malnourished, fearful, full of parasites,
and completely without care.
When a dog is brought
to us, we work to rehabilitate it.There
has never been a time limit on how long we keep a dog, and no temperament test is
required for a dog to qualify for rescue. We work with all breeds, ages, and
temperaments. In our experience, nearly every dog rescued, fed and made healthy
responds with gratitude and unbounded affection. These dogs know they have been
saved. Thousands of years of breeding by
humans have planted a response deep in their bones: any human who shows they
mean well is a human to be trusted. Over time, their trust in humans grows in
strength. As they overcome their sicknesses and hunger, they lose their fear. When they gain trust in their human caretakers,
any meanness caused by their lives on the streets disappears.
SOCIALIZING THE DOGS
Once healthy, a dog
is taught canine pack dynamics suitable for an adoptive household, and then they
are ready to move on. Working with them during this period is a joy since many
have never before had the opportunity to play, explore or express canine
behavior in a secure environment. This is their chance to learn how.
We are fortunate to
have a small kennel where we provide the dogs with a controlled, unthreatened
space to discover pack dynamics. Over the course of weeks and months, all of
our dogs are rotated through our pack society where, once properly socialized,
they are considered ready for adoption.
ADOPTING ONE OF OUR DOGS
Let’s say you are
interested in adopting one of our dogs. The first step is to fill out our
application. We will return your call or e-mail regardless of our decision. Our
goal is to match you up with the right dog for your lifestyle and experience
level. We know all of our dogs well by the adoption stage and have evaluated
them extensively. When you adopt a dog from us, it will be sterilized,
vaccinated, and dewormed. Each year we
adopt out hundreds of dogs of all breeds and ages, animals that came to us with
varying health histories.
If the dog turns
out not to be a good fit, we will take the animal back and adopt it out
elsewhere. But in almost every case, people who have adopted rescued pups and
dogs from our program report back to us that they have found loving and loved
companions and family members.
ASSISTING WITH DOMESTIC ADOPTIONS
While we can't take
in every dog and we focus our rescue efforts in Mexico
along the U.S. border, we do help people who
have rescued a dog in areas from Los Angeles
south to the border and need help placing it.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
For those who want to help the rescues continue but who
cannot adopt, we desperately need donations to keep this compassionate program alive.
In particular, some supplies are vital to rehabilitating and adopting out these
dogs and puppies. We can only help so many animals with what we have, but with
compassionate help from others like you, the number of dogs we could help would
be almost unlimited. This help can be
offered by contributing supplies or funds to buy supplies. These items are desperately needed:
·Lumber to build more shelters for
dogs being fostered
·Dog food, either dry or canned
·Medicine including:
oAdvantage
oFrontline
oAntibiotics
oMedications against internal parasites
oFlea or general external skin parasite
spray
·Collars and leashes, all sizes
·Bedding and blankets
·Dog Houses
·Volunteer foster homes
Those who donate either funds or
supplies in any amount, or who decide to foster rescued dogs during
rehabilitation, have our deep gratitude!
